Few things are as emotionally explosive as repressed 20th century England—but the Newlyn School of artists in Cornwall might be one of them. Summer in Februrary (2014) tells the story of a tragic love triangle between Alfred Munnings, Florence Carter-Wood, and Gilbert Evans of the Lamorna Group. Florence is an up-and-coming artist in love with both dashing dudes, who also love her and happen to be friends. Alfred is an already prominent anti-Modernist artist while Gilbert is in charge of the estate where the artist colony lives and paints. When Alfred proposes and Florence says yes, Gilbert is pretty pissed—but it doesn't look like their burgeoning romance has quite run its course. All this is quite troubling, but we luckily have Max Deacon, who plays Joey Carter Wood, to gaze upon while he frolicks into the ocean naked with a nude female companion. Not even a colony of Edwardian artists could do those buns justice.
