Part remake, part sequel, The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014) brings us back to Texarkana where the original 1976 film took place, depicting the true story of a serial killer who terrorized a community and evaded police. This new film, directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon and produced by American Horror Story and Glee creator Ryan Murphy, follows Jami Lerner (Addison Timlin) who isn’t fond of her town’s tradition of screening the 70s film annually at the local drive-in. She asks her boyfriend if they can leave but will soon regret it as he is dispatched by a new maniac on the prowl while she watches in horror. Traumatized by the event, she become obsessed as the masked killer reenacts more real-life murders shown in the original picture. She goes full Gyllenhaal à la Zodiac (2007), reading through the case files of not only the current murders, but the four-decade old ones as well. With the police, she attempts to solve the new case that so eerily parallels the unsolved crimes of generations past. Early on the hit list is Wes Chatham and his girl, who go at it like bunny rabbits in a motel room before their fate is sealed. Wes shows his ridiculously chiseled biceps and ripped abs as she rides him. He puts on some underwear and walks out, prompting us to yell “stay inside!” Too late. Oh well, he was hot while he lasted.
