Hey, pull up a chair and pour yourself a drink because today's film for Foreign Film Friday is going to make you wish you had a cocktail. That is because drinking is basically the entire plot in the Thomas Vinterberg film that revolves around being drunk. Let's have another round for Danish film Another Round starring Mads Mikkelsen.
This film is nominated for 2021's Best International Film as well as Best Director, so it has a little extra acclaim. The film focuses on four friends who all work together as high school teachers. Mads Mikkelsen plays one of the teachers who finds out that basically everyone in his life thinks that he has become boring. During one of the hangouts with his friends, the psychology teacher talks about a study he read that states that humans actually function better when a little bit inebriated. The boys, all bored with their lives, decide to try this experiment for themselves and start seeing how much they can drink during the day without it affecting their lives. It, of course, does eventually start to negatively affect all of them, but not before the guys have a lot of drunk fun.
My first thought when seeing this movie was: thank goodness this is not an American movie. If it were, it probably would have veered into the inappropriate a couple of times. Because it is a Danish movie, it really doesn't do that. Instead, the movie is filled with nuance and great performances, especially from leading stoic sexpot Mads Mikkelsen who does not go nude in the movie, but he has definitely gone nude before. Remember his ass in Polar or his backsack in Flickering Lights? I sure do!
