When I heard about an upcoming film called Taurus, I was very confused by the accompanying press photo for it. The guy in the movie looked like Machine Gun Kelly, but the film starred Colson Baker. Who the hell is Colson Baker and what has he done with Machine Gun Kelly's entire vibe? Well, it turns out that Colson Baker IS Machine Gun Kelly. It's his real name and this is a career rebrand. Let's talk about it because I am currently obsessed.
Machine Gun Kelly is a very popular rap-rocker who has had quite a year in the tabloids as Megan Fox's fiancee. The two of them seemed like the new Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton complete with blood pacts and tongue-jamming makeouts on the red carpet. The PDA-heavy heartthrob can do more than grab headlines and look beautiful on the red carpet. He is also a legitimate talent and it's about damn time that we all talk about him as such!
That is why MGK is getting more seriously into an acting career. Now that he is setting his sights on a long-term acting career, the gangly tattooed heartthrob wants a more serious-sounding name to go along with it. Let's be honest: he's outgrown the name Machine Gun Kelly. Enter Colson.
As reviews for his new film Taurus have already pointed out, Colson Baker can act. We all saw him act in the Netflix film Dirt as Tommy Lee and he shocked many audience members with how good he was. Tim Sutton directed this film, but Colson's fingerprints are all over it. The rap-rocker turned actor not only stars in the film that feels like the perfect vehicle for everything that MGK is all about, but he also is the executive producer, the script consultant, and the composer for the project. Not only is the project clearly slightly inspired by his own life, but he put himself into it so much that it might be difficult to separate the art from the artist in this one.
The film is about a rockstar who is struggling with fame in Hollywood. This atmospheric film follows Cole, based on Colson, as a popular star who is trying to balance his new lifestyle and persona with his real life. It's nothing we have not seen before, but we have not seen Colson Baker take the reigns. That alone is something to gawk at!
He does have some very rockstar-centric upcoming films besides this one. He is also in a film called Punk that was written and directed by Richard Hughes and costars Cara Delevignge, another edgy star. I have a feeling after these next few films that MGK will further embrace who Colson is as an actor and start starring in films where he doesn't play a rockstar. I would personally love to see such range...and I'd love to see the dudity that comes with those roles! Let's all hope for Baker's booty sometime soon.
