It's a sad day for fans of gay storylines and pirates because HBO Max has canceled Our Flag Means Death. The popular series coming to an end after only two seasons is breaking fans' hearts. Fans were rabid for this series and for a good reason: the men were hot and gay. This gay pirate show was fan fiction for people like us, so we are currently in mourning. Let's pay respects to the show.

In case you never watched it, the series was a hilarious comedy that took place in the 17th century when piracy ruled. In this Golden Age of Piracy series, hapless rich boy Stede Bonnet becomes a pirate and helms a crew of vicious swashbucklers even though he's pretty soft at heart. He does earn Blackbeard's affection and becomes his pet. The two of them form a close "friendship" - as do a lot of the other guys on the crew!

A lot of this is based on historical facts because pirates did have "pirate marriages" to one another as a way to will treasure to their bestie. This is where the word "mate" came from as this practice was called matelage. A lot of these relationships were more than friends, of course. They were actually in love and they were actually in lust! The series did a good job of portraying that with several crew members falling for one another.

That being said, there wasn't a ton of sex on the show. We saw ass, strapping shirtless men, and plenty of smooching. But did we see ass-out-bang sessions? Sadly, no.

It is sadly true that the series created by David Jenkins is coming to an end. To be fair, it felt as if the series were over. I know that fans are ready to go after me with swords for saying this, but come on! A lot of storylines were wrapped up - albeit a little hastily.

I do have faith that if given a third season, the series would have gotten stronger because the creators would have been forced to come up with cool new adventures. What kinds of cool new adventures? Probably sexy ones!

Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi played our leading pirates in love, Stede Bonnett and Blackbeard (who were real people by the way and the close relationship between Stede and Blackbeard that we saw in the first half of the first season was based on reality). They never had a sex scene, though. If they were given more time, would they have banged? I hope so!

RIP to Our Flag Means Death. Let's lower our flags at half-mast as we all set this series out to sea on a funeral pyre (that's Vikings, but still).
