Review

Based on the Kyle Onstott novel of the same name, Drum (1976), the sequel to the film Mandingo (1975), picks up fifteen years after the events of the first, and follows the titular character (Ken Norton), a tough ass slave born to prostitute Marianna (Isela Vega), who raises him with her lesbian lover Rachel (Paula Kelly). Drum grows up to be a fighter, which seems appropriate since he is often forced to do some bare-knuckle boxing against other slaves. When Drum is not fighting with his fists, he’s fighting off the sexual advances of fellow slave Bernard (John Colicos). But Bernard doesn’t take rejection well, which leads the jilted dude to vow revenge against his crush. Things quickly change when Drum, his girlfriend Regine (Pamela Grier), and his best bud Blaise (Yaphet Kotto) are sold to plantation owner Hammond Maxwell (Warren Oates). While Drum and Blaise are put to work in the fields, Regine is put to work in her new master’s bedroom, which doesn’t sit kindly with Augusta (Fiona Lewis), Maxwell’s fiancé. Things really get crazy when Maxwell’s daughter Sophie (Rainbeaux Smith) sets her eyes on daddy’s newest purchases, mainly Blaise. When the slave rejects Sophie’s sexual advances, she concocts a store that threatens the well-being of Blaise’s balls. Throw in a wild engagement party that is attended by Bernard, a slave uprising, some testicular trauma, a few murders, and a shirtless scene from Warren Oates, along with a butt-baring moment from Ken Norton, and you’ll be jerking to beat of your own drummer!
