Review

Adapted from the Stephen King novella of a similar name, The Shawshank Redemption (1994) is set in 1947 Portland, Maine and follows banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) as he’s convicted of the double murder of his wife and her lover and sentences to two consecutive life sentences at the titular fictional penitentiary. Staunchly proclaiming his innocence, Andy’s pleas are wholly ignored and he finds himself having a difficult time coping with life behind bars, a life that’s made more problematic by a corrupt warden (Bob Gunton), cruel guards led by the sadistic Capt. Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown), and degenerate inmates. In an attempt not to fall victim to his unfair treatment, the determined convict uses his banking skills to survive lock up and carve a better life for himself before he can make a run for it. Since it’s a prison film, we get the obligatory hose down-delousing scene that gives us the slightest hint of hiney from Robbins. We’d love to share a cell with Timmy!
