The 70s and 80s seem to love horror anthology films. Cat's Eye, Creepshow, Tales from the Crypt and so many more. Deadtime Stories falls right into that mix of movies. Jeffrey Delman directed the movie and worked on the screenplay with two other writers with stories loosely based on Little Red Riding Hood, Goldi Lox, werewolves, and witches. Jeffrey also filmed a huge amount of the movie's first section in his own backyard. Now that's how you get resourceful in Hollywood! There would later be reboots of Deadtime Stories in the 2010s, but this is the original. Who could ever beat the original?
The plot of this particular movie follows an uncle trying to tell his nephew three horror stories for bedtime. Bad idea much? The stories start off almost like fairytales, but they get increasingly gruesome. We see three different stories of terror that include witches, werewolves, and murderers - oh my! The only reprieve we get from all the horror comes from Scott Valentine who bares his booty when he gets out of a barrel bath that a witch gives him. You know, as you do. That shiny booty is certainly looking fierce. Um, Scott, will your fat ass be my Valentine?
Deadtime Stories did okay upon its release, but it did better on the VHS circuit and in home rentals. Ah, remember video stores? I mourn them every single day. Anyway, Deadtime Stories is not as popular as some of the other anthology horror movies at the time. Horror anthology movies took a bit of a break for a full two decades and a half before coming back with vengeance in the 2010s with movies like V/H/S and The Theatre Bizarre, both movies that are equally campy and terrifying.
