Biography

There’s no doubting the fact that Boston native Leonard Nimoy is best known for playing Captain Spock on the original series of Star Trek, as well as in the series’ spinoff feature films. He easily achieved the status of icon in that role, playing the dispassionate, strictly logical, part Vulcan first officer of the starship Enterprise. What many might not realize, however, is that he had a huge body of acting (and directing) work both before and after Star Trek. He made his debut in Queen for a Day (1951) and went on to appear in at least one episode of just about every single classic TV series from the 60s and 70s that one could possibly think of including Dragnet, Mackenzie’s Raiders, Sea Hunt, Rawhide, and The Twilight Zone just to name a few. By the time Star Trek came around, Mr. Nimoy was already a TV veteran with more than 40 credits on his resume. Of course, for Leonard, there is no escaping Star Trek. While he seemed to loathe the type of fame it brought him at first, as he aged he seemed to appreciate it more and lent his talent, voice, and face to a number of Star Trek video games, parodies, and appearances on cartoons like Family Guy and The Simpsons. However, we’re partial to his performance as Miller in the comedy Western film Catlow (1971), which finds Nimoy, in one scene, totally nude (save for quite a lot of facial and body hair) bathing in a tub and then fighting with another man all around a room. He ends up on the floor, and we don’t get to see any of his bits, but it’s a sexy performance from an absolute legend all the same. Sadly, Mr. Nimoy passed away in 2015 at the age of 83. He is gone, but his sex appeal and spirit will live long and prosper.
