Last week the French actor Alain Delon passed away. While we did not immediately remember his achievements and incredible life and career, that does not mean we are not mourning his loss on the world. Let us all remember Alain Delon because remembering a legend is never too late.

RIP: Remembering French Actor Alain Delon

Alain Delon was born and raised in France. He starred in the 1958 film Christine and had an affair with his co-star Romy Schneider. He starred alongside Marianne Faithfull in The Girl on a Motorcycle and had fun flirting with her. The Girl on a Motorcycle was premiering at an ill-fated Cannes Film Festival that was canceled that year, so it has taken several years for the film to be re-discovered and re-loved by audiences. He's a big reason for that!

The Girl on a Motorcycle was sort of a girl's answer to the biker movies that were coming out of Hollywood. In this film, Marianne Faithfull was a recent bride who was already feeling confined by her life as a wife. She leaves her hubby and her town on a bike and has an adventure filled with sexual re-awakening...and a bit of sex from Alain Delon.

After David O. Selznick discovered him at the Cannes Film Festival, he was offered international roles. His hottest role was in Purple Noon which was a European adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley. He played Tom Ripley and he played it very convincingly. He had a lot of critical acclaim for his take on the troubled, handsome stalker and conman.

Alain Delon enjoyed mega-stardom in France and was legitimately a sex symbol. Alain was never a huge star in Hollywood, but the industry at large knew of him. He was considered SO handsome that he even made known handsome men at the time feel insecure. you have to be super sexy to make Mick Jagger jealous!

Delon had a stroke in 2019 but recovered after a few years. He was later treated for lymphoma and his children decided to stop his treatments as it was making their father miserable with weakness. He went through several years of depression and contemplated ending his life, even openly advocating for euthanasia. In 2024, his health went downhill again and his family members openly fought over how to deal with his treatments and poor health. It was a very sad end to his life.

Finally, he died on August 18th at his home in Douchy at the age of 88. His family was with him and the cause of death was stated to be lymphoma. While he said he wanted his dog to be euthanized and buried with him, his family denied that request and sent the dog to live with a kind new family. I like to think that's a wonderful way to remember Delon: letting his dog live a long and healthy life!

RIP Alain Delon. Thank you for giving us so much of your handsome work!
