As a young man, Paramount Pictures promoted the lean brunette as a teen idol, pairing him with Sophia Loren in Desire Under the Elms (1958) and Audrey Hepburn in Green Mansions (1959). Off screen, Perkins carried on secret long-term affairs with actor Tab Hunter, artist Christopher Makos, and dancer-choreographer Grover Dale. That’s not to say he wasn’t also the marrying type.
