Review

Maelström (2000) was a French Canadian film from renowned Dune director Denis Villeneuve who also wrote this story. A woman named Bibiane Champagne - first of all, what a cool name! - co-owned a bunch of boutiques with her brother. Even though she has a famous parent and a business, she feels like her life is going nowhere. Her business is actually failing, so she starts to abuse drugs and alcohol to deal with her problems. One day she drives her car into a river and she could have died, but she is saved by a man with whom she begins an interesting conversation. Oh, and Bibi's story is narrated by a fish on a butcher's block who is waiting to be decapitated. Yes, you read that right! That is because the man who essentially saves her is a fishmonger from Norway. She has a good relationship with the fishmonger...and with his son. So her life is still a big fat mess! She hooks up with the fishmonger's son named Evian who is played by Jean-Nicolas Verreault. He has a sexy scene with the leading lady in which he is on top of her in bed. We don't get to see too much of his body beyond his shirtless back and chest from the side as he lets this depressed dame get a screw sesh worth living for. There's nothing fishy about this scene. We would love to drink a bottle of Jean-Nicolas Verreault when he plays Evian. Now that hunky is refreshing!
