Biography

When Lulu sang the hit tune “To Sir with Love” about To Sir, with Love (1967) star Sidney Poitier, who knew that he would later become a Sir? Yes, the esteemed icon was granted a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974. It’s just one of the many milestones in the life of this Bahamian-American actor (In the Heat of the Night), author (This Life), director (Stir Crazy), and diplomat who served as Ambassador to Japan (1997-2007). Through the years, the ebony legend received an NAACP Image Award in 2001; an Honorary Oscar in 2002; a SAG Life Achievement Award in 1999; a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album in 2008; a BAFTA Fellowship in 2016; and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. Last but not least, Mr. Poitier won Mr. Man’s heart (as well as another part of the anatomy) with his sexy turns in Blackboard Jungle (1955), The Defiant Ones (1958), Porgy and Bess (1959), A Raisin in the Sun (1961), and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967). Spoiler alert on the latter: Sidney is the one coming to dinner so bone appétit! Of course, the Tony, Silver Bear and two-time Golden Globe winner heightened our interest (among other things) when he flashed his abs in Lilies of the Field (1963). As a result, the topless hottie became the first person of color to win an Academy Award for a leading role. Alas, Sir Sidney died in 2009, but leaves behind an impressive canon that’ll blow you away!
