Our Staff Picks column is a new addition that takes you back to a time when video stores reigned supreme and the "Staff Picks" section was the place to find out what films were worthy of one's time. Of course, our version has a decidedly nude angle, as we suss out which films from a certain genre with great nudity. This week: Black directors!
It's Black History Month, let's look at some historically hot films from Black directors that also happen to contain nudity. There are so many amazing Black directors to celebrate like Barry Jenkins, Spike Lee, Julie Dash, Steve McQueen, Ava DuVernay, Ryan Coogler, Tyler Perry, and even Denzel Washington who has directed a handful of films.
These directors have made monumental films from Do the Right Thing to Black Panther to Daughters of the Dust, but this is Mr. Man. We want amazing movies that include male nudity! That's what we have here. These are our staff picks for amazing films from Black directors that include nudity.
Queen Slim
Daniel Kaluuya stars in this Lovers on the Run flick from Melina Matsoukas. Melina previously directed music videos, including the actually iconic "Formation" video for Beyonce. She showed off her ability to highlight beautiful things on camera by highlighting Daniel's booty in a backseat car sex scene that showed Daniel's backseat.
Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song
Gather round, children, and let me tell you about Melvin Van Peebles and blaxploitation cinema. Director Van Peebles is a self-taught maverick whose confidence and curiosity landed him on several film sets before he decided to write, direct, and act in his own original film. He plays Sweet Sweetback in this controversial indie film about a male prostitute who becomes a local hero when he goes up against the police to save a Black Panther.
This film, and Shaft, shaped the blaxploitation movement and you can see direct references to this movie in the absolutely hilarious comedy Black Dynamite. Hey, speaking of shafts, you can see Melvin's!
Mudbound
Dee Rees directed this powerful drama about two men who fought in World War II, but they return to their racist hometown in Mississippi and are not at all treated like war heroes the way that their white peers are. Jason Mitchell and Jason Clarke star with Jason Mitchell shows off his cock before things get quite horrible for him. It's a tough watch, but Jason's juicy cock and balls are nice to see.
Sorry to Bother You
This was one of the wildest and most creative films of the 2010s, hands-down. Atlanta star Lakeith Stanfield plays a phone salesman who discovers that the key to success is to sound like a white man on the phone. He gets promoted and praised and eventually meets the CEO of the company who has insidious plans. Before that outrageous twist, we are treated to Lakeith's tush.
Dope
Nigerian-American director Rick Famuyiwa was a Sundance darling for his 2015 feature film Dope. The film is about a teen Geek in a rough Los Angeles neighborhood who gets invited to a cool party. He and his friends see this as their chance to finally be cool, but that turns out to be a lot harder than they thought it would be.
Shameik Moore plays Malcolm who even shows his ass in one adorable scene when he is trying to get busy with a babe as we see the top of his booty in the mirror behind him.
The Wood
Speaking of Rick Famuyiwa, his debut film The Wood from 1999 was HOT. The film was about three best friends who have been through everything together. One of them is about to get married, but he freaks out and disappears. It is up to the other two to find him and figure out what's going on. Omar Epps, Richard T. Jones, and Taye Diggs all get hosed down in one memorable scene that will give you wood.
Love Basketball
And now for a classic! Love Basketball was a mainstream romantic comedy that put sports and love together and audiences ate it up. Monica and Quincy have been good friends since they were kids with a bond surrounding their shared love of basketball. As they grow up, things change between then. Namely, they become attracted to one another!
You'll break a sweat when you see Omar Epps' fit bod in this movie! We see his butt during a game of strip basketball that the two of them play. If only one of his balls would go out of bounds!
Boyz N the Hood
John Singelton's debut film had everyone talking in 1991. The film follows lifelong friends who all grew up in Los Angeles as things change for them. One of them is on a football scholarship at USC, one is trying to get into college, and another one of them got into drug dealing. They are all so different now, but they are trying to maintain their friendships and help each other out.
One way of doing that must be by checking out Cuba Gooding Jr's juicy ass in a brief sex scene. That helps, right? I think it does!
She's Gotta Have It
We can't talk about Black directors without praising Spike Lee. Between Do the Right Thing and She's Gotta Have It, Spike Lee has made some of the best American films of all time. Seriously, go watch Do the Right Thing if you've never seen it! I know you've probably seen She's Gotta Have It because she gotta have sexy men.
