Bret Easton Ellis is floating around in the news today due to an upcoming novel and an interesting interview in The New York Times, so we thought we would look back on the movies that are based on his controversial (and heavily gay-themed) novels. #TBT to the movie adaptations of Bret Easton Ellis' books!
First of all, it is worth talking about why he became famous. It's rare these days to have a celebrity writer, but Bret wasdefinitely one of them. The young novelist wrote immediate hits with his debut novel Less Than Zero being released in 1985 when he was only 21. From there he published 1987's Rules of Attraction and 1991's American Psycho which was a huge hit, but incredibly controversial for being very violent. The controversy caused his publishers to drop him despite the book's success. Since then he's become a bizarre Twitter personality and podcast host which may be bound to happen when you became an overnight sensation in your twenties. He was a member of the literary Brat Pack of East Coast writers in the 1980s. Bret is gay but has often danced around labels, saying that he'd rather people not think of him as a gay writer because his books would be read differently.
Whatever, dude! We have to say we have loved the gay themes in some of his movies. Let's take a look, shall we?
Less Than Zero
Less Than Zero was adapted into a moviebarely two years after its release. The crime drama was directed byMarek Kanievska and veers away from a lot of what the book is about. The movie starred Andrew McCarthy as a college freshman who returns home to discover his best friend now has a serious drug habit.
He also discovers Robert Downey Jr. and John Yurasekgetting busy together. We see their bums and not much else in an implied sex scene in which they are interrupted.
American Psycho
American Psycho is undoubtedly Ellis' most known work and the film is probably even better known. Directed byMary Harron, Christian Baleplays the obsessive Wall Street banking executive Patrick Bateman who satirizes the excesses of the 80s as he unleashes his inner rage and eventually goes on a brutal killing spree. Hey, at least he looks good doing it.
The Rules of Attraction
The Rules of Attraction was made in 2002 and stars a bevy of hunks at Camden College where Sean Bateman (Patrick's younger brother) played by James Van Der Beek is a drug dealer on campus. He, a virgin, and an openly bisexual male classmate get involved in a crazy love triangle that goes all over the place. Ellis said this is his favorite of the adaptations of his novels because it most closely resembled the feeling of the novel, but the film itself was not very successful.
Kip Pardue shows his shadowy dick in a dim nude scene that had us following a couple of rules of attraction to him.
We especially loved the scene where Ian Somerhalderposes in front of a mirror in his underwear. Look at that impressive package!
And finally, Fred Savagewas there! In his underwear!
The Informers
The Informers was the last adaptation of one of his novels and was released in 2009 and is the most filled with beautiful men. Wealthy, sexy LA men find that their lives intertwine in this story of 80s excess (sounds like Ellis has a thing he loves to write about, huh?). Jon Foster stars and looks so downright good in his boxer briefs.
And without them!
Austin Nichols is the other hottie who loves to show off his ass and abs. And don't worry, there is a lot of bisexual action in this movie which means the men get naked together. We're pleased to inform you of that!
