The Rules of Attraction (2002)

The Rules of Attraction (2002) are quite twisted in this tale of college students who stress the high in higher education. Based on American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis' 1987 novel and directed by Pulp Fiction (1994) cowriter Roger Avary, the film takes place at the fictional New Hampshire party school Camden College. James Van Der Beek plays Sean Bateman (Patrick's brother) a drug-dealing sexual predator constantly on the prowl for female prey. His primary concern is boning the virginal Lauren (Shannyn Sossamon), while the bisexual dude Paul (Ian Somerhalder) is dying to turn Sean, for one night at least. Lauren doesn't want Sean, though, she wants her boyfriend Victor (Kip Pardue) to pop her cherry. Sean starts receiving anonymous love letters he assumes come from Lauren while being completely oblivious to why Paul spends so much time with him, which sets into motion a chaotic series of events that will see people killing themselves, forcing themselves on others, and doing some old-fashioned gay-bashing. A cult classic full of 90's and 2000's teen stars, Jessica Biel lays to rest her goody-two-shoes 7th Heaven schtick as a coke-snorting, sex-crazed bimbo in this one, while Jay Baruchel, Kate Bosworth, and Thomas Ian Nichols will all show up briefly, as well. But it's a generous, sexually charged face-sucking session between Van Der Beek and Ian Somerhalder that really attracts us, as well as a fast-forward montage of Victor's sex-filled trip to Europe, where we get a quick glance at Kip Pardue’s powerful peen. Rule number one: if Sunshine from Remember the Titans (2000) takes off his pants, you've got a great movie! That's definitely worth a pause! Even The Wonder Years star Fred Savage strips down as a whitey tightie wearing junkie shooting up on a bed. Those scenes rule in The Rules of Attraction!
