Review

German filmmakers aren’t generally known for pulling punches when it comes to harrowing, gut punching dramas, and Emily Atef’s feature film The Stranger in Me (2008) is no exception. It tells the story of a young and very much in love couple who decide to have a baby, and while the birth itself goes perfectly fine, the emotional aftermath proves to have the potential to be devastating. The new mother falls deep into post-natal depression and struggles throughout the film to cope with her new life situation, while her husband attempts to help her find her normal, healthy self again.

It’s heavy stuff, to be sure, but fortunately you can also always rely on those artsy German indie auteurs to serve up some really nice nudity, and The Stranger in Me fits the type there once again. Star Johann von Bulow gives the camera a couple of solid looks Bulow his belt, showing off everything he’s got in one scene in which he strips off his clothes and in another in which he gets out of the tub.
