The Zone of Interest (2023)

Jonathan Glazer's harrowing and gorgeously shot 2023 war drama The Zone Of Interest swept awards season, and for good reason. The Best International Feature Film winner at the 2024 Oscars illuminates the horrors of World War II in a way never before seen on film. The Zone Of Interest follows a family of Nazis enjoying their idyllic life just outside the confines of the Auschwitz concentration camp. Rudolf Höss, his wife Hedwig, and their children are unphased by the atrocities happening right across the border, even though they can hear screams, gunshots, and worse. Hedwig never once feels remorse for her lifestyle, but its conclusion, The Zone Of Interest hints that Rudolf may have second thoughts. Speaking of Ru, the actor who portrays him, Christian Friedel, strips down to his period-appropriate swimwear in one scene and gets a physical from a doctor in another.
