Age of Reason (2018)

The Finnish war drama Oma maa (2018), or Age of Reason, tells an age old story of a forbidden love between two people from opposite social standings. The film spans the seven year reconstruction period in Finland, beginning at the end of WWII and continuing through the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, a period of upheaval and uncertainty exemplified by the central love story. Veikko (Konsta Laakso) is a soldier who was injured while fighting on the frontlines in the waning days of the war and is gifted a small tract of land in return for his valiant service. The only catch is that he must get married in order to be granted this land. Anni (Oona Airola) is a young woman from an aristocratic family who defies her family's wishes when she falls in love with Veikko and agrees to marry him. Cut off from her family's wealth, Anni does her best to make a new and simpler life with Veikko, with their love growing alongside the country's own rebirth as a cultural capital of the world. Of course, they can't outrun the past forever and an unseen threat is slowly creeping toward them. Anni and Veikko will soon find out whether love truly conquers all!
