It's possible that you can't hear Charlie Murphy's name without saying it in the tone of Dave Chapelle playing Rick James talking to Charlie Murphy. That's okay because Charlie loved telling that story and several other stories of him being an actor and comedian in the 1980s when his brother Eddie had skyrocketed to fame. Charlie was just as talented and known for his own unique brand of goofy humor. Charlie was born and raised in New York City as the older brother. After he got out of the navy in 1984, he joined his brother in the entertainment business with work in Harlem Nights, Mo' Better Blues, Jungle Fever, The Players Club, and many more. He also wrote several full-length screenplays including one called The Peddler that he sold for a lot of money to Paramount, but the film was never made. At least he got that check! He experienced renewed fame when he played himself as the narrator in Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories sketches on Chappelle's Show in 2003. The most famous of these sketches include the time he was bitch-slapped by Rick James and when he played basketball (and ate pancakes) with Prince. These sketches came to be because Charlie, a writer for the show, had people in stitches with all of his stories in the writer's room. Something you might not know about Charlie is that he was shirtless and wearing only his boxers in the 1993 comedy CB4. Charlie passed away in 2017, but we will always remember his CB4 shirtless scene. We hope he's playing basketball with Prince in heaven.
