Biography

Apopular actor with almost 200 credits to his name, Glynn Turman is a legend on the stage, on television, and on the silver screen. Growing up in New York, Glynn started his acting career early and attended Manhattan’s renowned High School of Performing Arts. As a teenager, he originated the role of Travis Younger on the Broadway in the landmark play A Raisin in the Sun, acting opposite Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee. When he was 21, he grabbed his first regular on-camera gig, playing Lew Miles in the popular soap opera Peyton Place from 1968-1969. Of the 65+ feature films he’s appeared in, you may know Glynn best for his roles as Preach in Cooley High (1975), Roy in Gremlins (1984), Dr. Shakespeare in How Stella Got Her Groove Back(1998), Chief Floyd in Men of Honor (2000) Dr. Frank Hopper in Sahara (2005), Harold Saint in Burlesque(2010) (It’s okay to admit you’ve seen it. More than once.), Dr. Woodward in Super 8 (2011) (he’s good a playing doctors), General Whalen in Bumblebee (2018), Doc in The Way Back (2020) and Toledo in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020). He was also butt-naked as Pastor Davis in Solace (2018). His television appearances are too numerous to list, but let’s just say he’s been in over 400 episodes of over 115 different shows. Of note? The Wire, where he played Mayor Clarence V. Royce from 2004-2008, and got caught with his pants down, getting a BJ from a young lady. You see his penis in Season 4, episode two, but only get as excited as a fake dick will excite you—it’s a prosthetic. Still, one has to believe (and by one, Mr. Man means himself) that wardrobe supplied a suitable and possibly matching accessory.
