Biography

The ruggedly handsome John Huston could easily pass for Ernest Hemingway’s long lost cousin since they both were eccentric macho men who railed against The Man. Not only was John a talented actor, he was an artist behind the camera. As a director, Huston made nearly 40 flicks — most of which are considered cinematic classics. Imagine one filmmaker’s resume boasting The Maltese Falcon (1941) and The African Queen (1951) starring the legendary Humphrey Bogart. Before directing Hollywood icons Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable in The Misfits (1961) and A-listers Michael Caine and Sean Connery in The Man Who Would Be King (1975), John led his father Walter Huston to an Oscar victory via The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948). The same can be said for his daughter Anjelica Huston per her turn in his crime film Prizzi’s Honor (1985) featuring Hollywood heavy Jack Nicholson. John and Jack had already co-starred alongside Faye Dunaway in Roman Polanski’s neo-noir mystery Chinatown (1974). With his tall stature and baritone voice, Huston played Glennon in The Cardinal (1963); Noah in The Bible: In the Beginning... (1966); The Lawgiver in the Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973); and Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes in New York (1976). Yet we prefer John’s shirtless performance in Winter Kills (1979) wherein he flaunts his red bulging briefs! Nearly a decade later, Huston directed his final film, aptly titled The Dead (1987). Thankfully, while he was alive, the auteur let us in on his incredible body... of work!
