Review

Rock Hudson was an Adonis of a man who stood at 6' 4" tall and had the sexy midcentury looks on lockdown. He's Don Draper meets Superman, and the world could not get enough of him in his heyday. Hudson is most famous for starring in a string of romantic comedies opposite Doris Day in the 50s and 60s. However many have known for a long time that Hudson was not the straight leading man he appeared to be on screen. He was closeted in a time when being gay would have been unheard of in Hollywood. Hudson had to keep his gay identity on the down low, and it is this double life that is the subject of the documentary All The Heaven Allowed. We're privy to rare interviews conducted with Rock's inner circle of male friends. But a closeted gay life that ended in an AIDS-related illness isn't as sad as you might suspect. Rock Hudson has transcended his difficult past to become a gay icon, and now he's inspiring a new generation of queer people. Of course, Rock Hudson and good looks and looking good shirtless all go hand in hand. All That Heaven Allowed allows is to see some archival footage in which we can enjoy Rock Hudson shirtless. Respectfully. Stuck between a Rock and a hard place? We wish.
