Our Staff Picks column is a new addition that takes you back to a time when video stores reigned supreme and the "Staff Picks" section was the place to find out what films were worthy of one's time. Of course, our version has a decidedly nude angle, as we suss out which films from a certain genre with great nudity. This week: black and white movies!
Black-and-white makes everything look classier, but people also tend to think that black-and-white means "old" or "boring". That is hardly the case! Even old movies have hot scenes, which I will show you in a moment, and so many modern movies have expertly filmed huge cocks in black-and-white. I think that makes them look even more beautiful. Roma
The Oscar-nominated film Roma is a gorgeous, heartbreaking, and personal film by director Alfonso Cuarón. This 2018 film introduced us to new Mexican actors in this story about a rural young Mexican woman working in a wealthy Mexico City family's house as their nanny.
Roma is a fantastic film. I saw it in the movie theater and I absolutely wept, but I was able to take a break from all of the tear-jerking to start jerking off to Jorge Antonio Guerrero's nude martial arts scene. He demonstrates his skills with a staff while being totally in the buff. I'd love to see him work his way around another kind of staff, if you catch my drift.
Cat Sticks
I want to highlight a film that I have highlighted on my Staff Picks for South Asian cinema, but this black-and-white flick features hot dudity that is a rarity for an Indian film. Ronny Sen directed this movie about addiction and love as a group of addicts in Kolkata spend one rainy night trying to score crack. Their journeys to drug fixes intersect in various ways that show us how far some people will go to get their next high.
It is a surprisingly empathetic look at addiction which is helped by the black-and-white cinematography AND the nudity. During one nude scene with Tanmay Dhanania and Sounak Kundu, we have the privilege of seeing dick and balls as the men inject each other with drugs. Their cocks are my addiction!
Madonna: Truth or Dare
Madonna's 1991 concert documentary is absolutely fascinating. It gave us an unbridled look inside the touring life of Madonna while at the peak of her popularity. While she was performing in cone bras to "Vogue" every night, she and her backup dancers and crew were playing games like Truth or Dare in their hotel room to hot results.
The film famously features a hot take from her then-boyfriend Warren Beatty who accused Madonna of not wanting to do anything if it isn't on camera. The fact that that is left in the film? I live! The Lighthouse
Oh, The Lighthouse. Oh, Robert Pattinson masturbating. What? That is what I think of when I think of this strange movie. Robert Eggers' followed up his successful horror flick The Witch with this strange, black-and-white film starring Robert and Willem Dafoe as two men cooped up in a lighthouse. Are they going crazy? Probably! But I am crazy about this scene:
Wings
I need to take it all the way back to nearly 100 years! I can't possibly have a list of black-and-white staff picks without talking about a classic film from the 1920s before films were in color at all. Of course, there is no nudity in this movie as male nudity was rarely filmed back then (Salome being one immediate exception that comes to mind), but this silent classic featured cinema's first gay kiss.
William Wellman directed this Clara Bow classic set during World War I. That's how old it is - the second war hadn't even started yet. Damn, history is wild. Richard Arlen and Charlie "Buddy" Rogers made history when they embraced and kissed in this scene.
Leather Jacket Love Story
Let's focus our attention on a gay classic! This 1997 indie flick is filmed in black-and-white and it is sexy all over. David DeCouteu directed this film about an aspiring writer who is barely over 18. He moves to Los Angeles to pursue his passion and while living in Silver Lake he meets a bunch of other gay men. He has a lot of fun flirting with all of them...especially when he does so naked.
He does meet one man at a coffee shop who totally rocks his world. Now our two hunks are exploring each other's bodies and exploring everything that gay LA has to offer.
We see both of them nude and we also see a bunch of hot zaddies in the buff as everyone hangs out by the pool without their clothes on. They don't just go swimming - they give each other a lot of pleasure in the bedroom. There is even an orgy! Leather Jacket Love Story is one of the pornier films in the gay canon which is exactly why it is such a classic.
