What Have I Done to Deserve This? (1984)

You gotta love films that pose a question in their titles. The Spanish drama What Have I Done to Deserve This? (1984) is set in Madrid, Spain during the 80s and follows Gloria (Carmen Maura), a desperate chick that lives in a shit apartment with her husband, Antonio (Ángel de Andrés López), their two children, and her mother-in-law. When Gloria is not popping pills and hanging out with her hooker friend Cristal (Verónica Forqué), she earns a living working as a maid. Gloria’s life is made worse by her hubby’s open desire for a long lost love, and the fact that her mother-in-law is a strange bird that is addicted to bottled water and cupcakes. The film takes a real turn for the weird when Gloria kills her cad of husband with a ham bone, a crime that is only witnessed by Money, her in-law’s lizard. Throw in a perverted dentist, the memoirs of Hitler, and an impotent police officer, and you’ve got the makings of a crazy film. Luis Hostalot manages to cut through the craziness by showing complete nudity during a shower sex scene, which has us inevitably asking, What Have I Done to Deserve This? The answer? Sat through a terrible movie. That’s the price we’re willing to pay to see some penis!
