Thanks to his starring, Academy Award-nominated role as Sonny Corleone in the blockbuster drama The Godfather (1972) and its sequels, James Caan cemented a place for himself in the history of Hollywood as one of the great actors of his time. The Bronx-born tough guy seems to have a knack for earning memorable roles, like playing football hero Brian Piccolo in the TV movie Brian’s Song (1971), broken-footed author Paul Sheldon in Misery (1990), and Buddy’s dad Walter in Elf (2003). With almost 150 credits on his acting resume, you’d think we’d be well-acquainted with every inch of James, but you’d only be partially right—specifically, all the parts except the groin region. As Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom in the John Updike-adapted drama Rabbit, Run(1970), we’re treated to views of his hairy chest and plump posterior. We also get to see him in tightie-whities that are actually tight and give us a pretty good idea of the package beneath the wrapper. Full dressed, though, there are plenty of opportunities to admire James and his gravelly voice, which can also be heard on the series of The Godfather video games as the famous Sonny, and as the voice of Tim Lockwood in the animated movie duo Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009, 2013). Check out James on the big screen in Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy (1990), Eraser (1996) with the Arnold, Dogville (2003) with Nicole Kidman, That’s My Boy (2012) with Adam Sandler, and in Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis (2024), and on TV as casino boss Ed Deline in the series Las Vegas from 2003-2007. Boss, indeed.
