What do you get when Italy and France join forces? The political answer is the European Union but the cinematic reply is The Last Woman (1976), also known as La Dernière femme, L’ultima donna, and Die letzte Frau. A few years before Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep picked up Academy Awards for playing the titular parents embroiled in a custody battle in the Oscar-winner Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), a similar situation was brewing in this skinternational drama. The major difference between the two movies is that this one is rated X. In other words, it’s best watched with a box of tissues! Under the direction of co-screenwriter Marco Ferreri, French sex symbol Gérard Depardieu plays Gérard, a hunky engineer who is left by his wife Gabrielle (Zouzou). She’s a staunch feminist who finds fault with the institution of marriage. That’d be fine if their child wasn’t involved in the equation. Moving on, Gérard becomes romantically involved with his son’s daycare worker Valérie (Ornella Muti). Whether getting busy with his wife at the start of the flick or his lover mid-pic, Depardieu shows off his abs, ass, sack and shaft — including brandishing an impressive erection! But when he tells his ex that he wants custody of their boy, she challenges him. Heartbroken, the ex-husband does what every normal dude would do — he lops off his cock! Perhaps that’s why Depardieu was nominated for a César Award for Best Actor. No doubt, voters thought he was good … to the last chop!
