Born in Saint-Mandé in Val de Marne, France to a doctor and an English teacher, Charles started going to theater school when he was just 15. When he got older, he continued his study of the actor’s craft in Brussels. After taking roles in productions of classic plays like Molière’s L'école des Femmes, Charles’s undeniable talent (and undeniably tight ass) caught the eye of the National Theater of Strasbourg’s director, Jean-Louis Martinelli. But the silver screen began calling Charles in the 90s, leading him to take small roles in films like the 1992 drama-romance Desire (1992) and the jazz-themed 1993 drama Just Friends. What, no benefits? The big year for Charles’s career was 1996, when he was nominated for Best Actor at the César Awards for his performance as Le Marquis Grégoire Ponceludon de Malavoy in Ridicule, a costume drama set in the court of the Sun King, Louis XVI.
