Donald Sutherland’s skin puts the thrills into the thriller Don’t Look Now (1973), not to be confused with the chiller diller Don’t Look (2018), the drama Don’t Look at Me That Way (2015) or the black comedy Don’t Look Up (2021) starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet. Based on the same-named novel by Daphne du Maurier, this R rated flick focuses on a fantastical descent into the murkiest, most mysterious depths of emotional consciousness. Spooky and sexy, replete with unsettling settings, director Nicolas Roeg takes viewers to the dank canals and ill-lit church interiors of Venice. These haunting visuals serve as metaphors for the labyrinthine recesses that form the intersection of the human mind and soul. Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie play a married couple whose daughter Christine (Sharon Williams) has drowned. Eerily, Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood (who would later drown in real life) were first considered for the parts. As it stands, John (Sutherland) and Laura (Christie) cope with their loss by flirting with the occult. For example, Laura attends a séance to communicate with Christine while John entertains premonitions of his death. Fortunately for us, he makes time to reveal his chest and bush when emerging from the bath at the movie’s 27-minute mark. If that’s not arousing enough, the lanky leading man steps into the bedroom to make love to his woman. As such, we get to see Donald’s derrière during the steamy sex scene. Never mind the film’s title — look now at the flesh on screen!
