Relationships with your parents can be a messy thing sometimes, especially when you get older yourself and realize your dad might not have been the best dad in the world.  Things can get especially heinous when dear old dad begins to show signs of dementia and flashes back and forth between your childhood, present day, and tries having conversations with your dead mother.  For charming ex-Air Force and current airline pilot, John Peterson (Viggo Mortensen), he takes on the massive task of helping his aging father, Willis (Lance Henriksen), find a place to live near him and his sister after he can't take care of himself anymore.  John remembers the rough upbringing his dad tried to instill in him to "make him a man", but the biggest issue comes with John's sexuality and his marriage to partner Eric (Terry Chen) and their life together with their adopted daughter in Southern California.  John does his best to not get caught up in his dad's disapproval of his marriage, while calling him names regularly, causing scenes everywhere they go, and more importantly, ignoring the terrible things he says about the past that John didn't know about, including the affairs and relationships that defined his father's life.  The difference in generational ideologies about sexuality, modern family, manhood, and that "Commie scumbag Picasso" keep spewing out of granddad's mouth at every turn.  We guess "grandpa says the damndest things!" isn't excuse enough for a past that cuts this deep.  The film marks Viggo's directorial debut and he doesn't shy away from getting hot and heavy with Terry Chen in a make out scene for the ages!
