Set in 16th-century Stratford-upon-Avon, the flick imagines the personal tragedy that may have inspired William Shakespeare to write Hamlet. The story centers on Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes (Jessie Buckley), as they struggle with the sudden passing of their eleven-year-old son, Hamnet, during a plague outbreak. Agnes' emotional journey is the core of the film, while Paul Mescal portrays Shakespeare as a traveling playwright who spends much of the film away in London before returning home to confront the devastating loss and its effect on his family. The film quickly became a major awards contender after winning the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. It went on to win Best Drama at the Golden Globe Awards and beyond. We would have loved to give Hamnet an award of our own, but all we get is a little ass from Mescal, who showed a whole lotta that dumper and more in Normal People. Forget Hamnet, we want to net some ham!
