Biography

Philip Seymour Hoffman lent his big presence to small parts. Primarily a supporting actor, PSH knew how to steal a scene as seen in Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) and Cold Mountain (2003); Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous (2000); and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love (2002), Magnolia (1999), and Boogie Nights (1997). The latter performance as a gay boom operator caught Mr. Man’s eye (and another part of his anatomy). Who cares about Dirk when Philip is in the room! In PTA’s The Master (2012), PSH’s character received a hand-job from his wife played by Amy Adams. In fact, whenever Hoffman co-starred with Adams (Charlie Wilson’s War, Doubt), he nabbed Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominations. Yet it was his titular turn in Capote (2005) that won him the Best Actor Academy Award! That’s not to say Philip didn’t impress us in other films. The topless talent added thrills to the thriller Red Dragon (2002) when he exposed his chest and bulging undies while glued to a chair. At least, we think it was glue! PSH also displayed his naked T&A while banging Marisa Tomei in Sidney Lumet’s Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007). Hoffman received a Tony nomination for Death of a Salesman in 2012 before his drug-related death in 2014. Philip was only 44, but he leaves behind a legacy on stage (Long Day’s Journey into Night, Othello, True West) and on film (Hunger Games franchise, Mission: Impossible III, Twister, The Savages, Moneyball, Flawless, Synecdoche, New York). RIP PSH!
