Review

Clint Eastwood made his directorial debut with Play Misty for Me (1971), which depicts a Fatal Attraction (1987) scenario nearly three decades prior to that landmark entry in the "she be crazy" thriller genre. Clint not only directs but stars as Dave Garver, a popular disc jockey who has a casual girlfriend but maintains a pseudo bachelor lifestyle nevertheless. When he meets Jessica Walter at a bar, her voice has a ring of familiarity because she has been calling in to his show on a regular basis with the same request every time. "Play Misty for me," she asks in soft dulcet tones that will turn to maddening shrieks soon enough. No matter how many ways Dave tries to drop the hint that their hookup was a just that, nothing more - she just won't quit. Rejection is not an option and ladies man Clint is going to have to learn that the hard way. A very young Eastwood prowls around in a late scene wearing only his white skivvies, showcasing his briefs-covered bum and bulge. Kudos to Clint for calling the shots and immortalizing his early 70s physique.
