Querelle (1982)

Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s swan song comes in the form of Querelle (1982). Adapted from Jean Genet’s novel “Querelle de Brest” (1947), the provocative drama centers around the sexploits of the titular character (Brad Davis). He’s a devilishly handsome Belgian sailor who touts his bare chest and bulging pants. When Querelle arrives in France, he immediately heads to a brothel run by Lysiane (Jeanne Moreau), who just happens to be the lover of his brother Robert (Hanno Pöschi). Querelle has a love/hate relationship with his sibling. While they embrace each other, they also have an aggression towards one another that is quelled by having sex. Wait, what? Talk about brotherly love! But before Querelle bangs his bro, he has his first homosexual encounter with Nono (Günther Kaufmann), Lysiane’s hubby with a chubby. As the sordid story carries on, Querelle falls for Gil (also played by Pöschi), a murderer who resembles his brother. But their affair hits the rocks when Gil gets rock-hard for Roger (Laurent Male). This ignites Querelle’s jealousy, causing him to turn Gil in to the authorities. Yet the big twist comes when we find out that Querelle and Robert weren’t really brothers after all. What a relief! Speaking of, you may be relieved to see sexy Franco Nero and a leather-clad Burkhard Driest. Better yet, a be-thonged Dieter Schidor bares his buns and bulge 20 minutes into the flick. Later, Mr. Pöschi pulls down his panties to assume the position at the 48-minute mark. No wonder, Querelle is bone-ified classic!
