Somebody I Used to Know (2023)

Over a decade after choosing her career as a television producer in L.A. over her hometown love Sean (Insecure’s Jay Ellis), the down-on-her-luck Ally (Alison Brie) flies back home alone after her reality baking competition show Dessert Island is canceled to reassess her life. Sean seeks to reconnect with Ally during a night out of drinking and reminiscing about old times, while Ally smells a potential happily-ever-after ending for the two of them. That is, until she learns that he’s engaged to much younger Cassidy (Kiersey Clemons), the free-spirited, bisexual lead singer of a Seattle-based punk band. In the movie’s most meta moment, Cassidy point blank asks Ally if she’s going to pull a “Julia Roberts/My Best Friend’s Wedding-type” of maneuver, and the answer, though, she doesn’t admit it, is yes. But what started as breaking up the wedding for her own nefarious purposes turns into Ally trying to stop Cassidy from making a mistake and giving up on her dreams. We’re not one to give away spoilers, but we can’t NOT mention that the end of this movie includes Ally and her film crew, lead by sexy cameraman Kelvin Yu, getting fully nude to interview a shy, still new to nudity naturalist. Now that’s our kind of happy ending!
