The Surrealist classic The Phantom of Liberty (1974) is a strange flick that kicks off with a man selling postcards with photographs of various French tourist attractions that he has labeled “pornographic.” From there, we’re introduced to a bevy of interesting characters, including a sniper (Pierre Lary) that is hailed a hero for picking off passerbys; a missing child that helps the police fill out the missing report on her; a bevy of monks playing poker, using religious relics as chips; and a formally dressed group that gathers around toilets that they use as tables. Between all the weirdness, Michael Lonsdale manages to share a look at his rump as a lucky woman whips him. Michael’s got a surreal-nice ass!
