Review

Waves (2019) is director Trey Edward Shult's follow-up to It Comes at Night (2017), though the films are wildly different. In place of a post-apocalyptic survival flick, this film is a family drama about how quickly a few bad decisions can ruin everything. Kelvin Harrison Jr. stars as Tyler Williams, a high school senior who seems to have everything going for him. He's an elite wrestler, he's got a cool girlfriend (Alexa Demie), and his dad (Sterling K. Brown) and sister (Taylor Russell) both love him. His only issue is a nagging shoulder injury that should have him on the sidelines instead of on the mat. Foolishly, he ignores his doctor's advice and keeps wrestling, only to injure his shoulder and end up permanently unable to compete in wrestling. Then, his girlfriend announces she's pregnant, keeping the baby, and just might dump him if he doesn't at least pretend to be happy about it. Tyler turns to drugs and alcohol to deal with the mental and physical pain, then goes crazy, beats up his girlfriend and accidentally kills her. Off to prison he goes, while his family is left trying to pick up the pieces of their now broken lives. Most of the film centers around this rebuilding effort, with particular focus on how Tyler's sister falls into the arms of a classmate (Lucas Hedges) to try and deal with her grief. We're not sure what weight class Kelvin Harrison Jr. wrestles in, but we know his body is all sorts of cut. Does he work out? Yeah, obviously. Kelvin shows off his athletic body when he runs around the high school track shirtless. His abs are definitely making Waves in our pants! Kelvin also shows his ass after the workout montage when he takes a shower in the locker room. Mr. Man would love to get taken down by him! He also works out with his father played by Sterling K. Brown who is sterling as a man his age can be when he works out shirtless. Like father, like son! Good genes. We'd love to unzip them! With those sexy dudes of different generations, Waves will have you waving to every fine black man you see!
