Beloved (1998)

Based on the 1987 Toni Morrison novel that you probably had to read in high school, Beloved (1998) is a moderately terrifying drama about a former slave and her fragmented family struggling in post-Civil War era America. Sethe, played by the one and only Oprah Winfrey, lives on the outskirts of Cincinatti in a house that's haunted by evil spirits. That's not a great living situation, but it's better than her old one. She used to live on a Kentucky plantation, where she was repeatedly abused and beaten by the nephews of plantation owner Schoolteacher (Jude Ciccolella), then whipped for complaining about it. When she was recaptured after briefly escaping the plantation, she killed one of her daughters in an attempt to save her from a horrible life on the plantation. Now free and living in Ohio, Sethe starts spending time with an attractive man named Paul D (Danny Glover), only for Sethe's reincarnated daughter to appear as a grown woman with mental issues named Beloved (Thandiwe Newton). She'll cause all sorts of chaos for Sethe, largely by sleeping with Paul D, while those dang poltergeists aren't going anywhere either. Full of magical realism, this brutal look at the lasting effects of slavery has tons of scenes that are very tough to watch. The one where Danny Glover shows his buns is definitely not one of them! Danny's bathing in a bucket, and when he stands up to kiss Oprah, we get a great look at his soaking wet black bubble butt! Danny's derriere is an absolute dumper, and we are here for it! Whatever movie he makes next, sign Mr. Man up to play the next Glover lover because that bum is Beloved by everyone who sees it!
