Review

The Brazilian film La Terra Degli Uomini Rossi—or as it was known simply in the rest of the world, Birdwatchers (2008)—is set among the indigenous Guariní people who make their home in the southern part of Brazil. The film opens with a group of tourists taking a riverboat tour of the Brazilian rainforest when they come across a group of Guariní standing mostly nude along with river bank, their faces painted, their weapons crudely made, giving the tourists the thrill of their lives when they think that they've become the first people to encounter the native tribe. Once the tourists leave, however, the Guariní put their clothes back on and return to their otherwise normal village, living a life of seclusion and getting their kicks by goosing unsuspecting and ignorant tourists in this way. When a younger group of Guariní decide that it might be time for them to leave their reservation and make their way into a city mostly inhabited by white people, it causes a major culture clash not only among the other members of the tribe, but also among the less than welcoming people they plan to cohabitate with in the coming years. The film has a light touch but it does deal with some very heavy subject matter, not least of which is the subject of integration. Thankfully there's some nudity along the way to make up for it, such as when Claudio Santamaria briefly bares his dick, balls, and butt while bathing nude in a river or when we get a nice close-up look at Pedro Abrísio da Silva's bare ass when he takes off his pants to go skinny dipping! That's the kind of Birdwatching we love here at Mr. Man!
