Review

Like Barfly (1987), the bourbon-soaked Factotum (2005) is based on the prose of cult literary icon Charles Bukowski. In this case, it's Bukowski's pseudo autobiography of the same name serving as the sauced-up source material. The title refers to a man of many jobs--none of them particularly well-paying--and the narrative captures the working stiff Hank Chinaski (Matt Dillon) as he drinks, writes, and methodically endures wage-slave drudgeries as a taxi driver, statue cleaner, yacht deckhand, factory worker, and more. Somehow making a drunk buddy at every gig he finds himself doing, Hank has a ton of Hanky panky throughout the flick. First, he meets fellow wino Jan (Lili Taylor), who he lives with until a drunken brawl at a horsetrack has her heading for the hills. Then, he starts hooking up with Laura (Marisa Tomei) until he ruins her relationship with her rich sugar daddy Pierre (Didier Flamand). Eventually, he'll realizes that he can ignore the cooch. All he needs in life is a bottle of hooch, and a pen to do his writing. Mordantly comical and cynically romantic, Bent Hamer’s film allows its downtrodden protagonist a few passing fancies. The viewer benefits from the assing fancy of Matt Dillon a couple of times. First, he's railing some woman on the couch and we see his cheeks as he's thrusting. He might be scraggly and disheveled, but those buns are in peak, cheek form! There's more booty when Matt wakes up and feels all sorts of pain in his balls. Need Mr. Man to drain them? We'll do it anytime, anyplace, and that's just a fact! We'll even tickle the scrotum! Yes, write this one down: we’d really like to Factotum Matt!
