Review

The 1999 indie comedy But I’m a Cheerleader follows the adventures of Megan (Natasha Lyonne), an all-American high-school cheerleader whose suspect behaviors prompt her repressed parents, Peter (Bud Cort) and Nancy (Mink Stole) to send her to a sexual redirection camp, True Directions, to be deprogrammed by camp leader, Mary Brown (Cathy Moriarty), where she meets and falls in love with a beautiful teenage lesbian named Graham (Clea Duvall). While Mary is busy trying to get the gay out of the camp goers, her son Rock (Eddie Cibrian) is busy eyeing up the dudes by the campfire. This gay-positive romantic comedy won awards at both the Crétiel International Women’s Film Festival and The Political Film Society. There’s no nudity, but Eddie Cibrian fantastically fills out some jean shorts and a tank top while stroking the phallic end of a rake. Need a hand, Eddie!
