From William Friedkin, the director of The Exorcist (1973), The Guardian (1990) was Friedkin’s triumphant return to the horror genre, having spent time working in the thriller genre. When Phil Sterling (Dwier Brown) relocates to Los Angeles with his wife, she surprises him by telling him she's pregnant. When their baby boy is born, they enlist the help of a nanny from the highly recommended agency The Guardian Angles. The charming English Camilla (Jenny Seagrove) quickly becomes an important and beloved member of the household. But when the calm and caring Camilla starts to match descriptions of a baby-snatching psycho, who disappeared around the time Camilla came into the Sterlings’ lives, things start to get scary. Siskel and Ebert agreed, giving The Guardian two thumbs down, they criticized shaky plot elements and a failure to frighten. The film may be saved by the frighteningly good looking Dwier Brown. Best known for playing Kevin Costner’s father in Field of Dreams (1989), this steamy, dreamy, ghost dad shows off his hairy chest and quaff of hair a few times. A saucy sex dream pairs the naughty 90’s man with his wife (Carey Lowell) before she morphs into Camilla. Friedkin should have titled this film The Sexorcist!
