Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999)

Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999) is a biopric about the life and career of Black entertainer Dorothy Dandrdge. This film directed by Martha Coolidge and written by Shonda Rhimes based on the book play Earl Mills (that's a lot of people involved, but that's what it takes to tell a story sometimes) tells us all about the famous dancer, actress, and singer. We follow her from her early days singing in clubs around America with her sister until she gets discovered and becomes an actress. Dorothy was actually the first Black actress to be nominated for a Best Actress award at the Oscars for her role as Carmen Jones in 1954. Sadly, her life had a downturn when she became hooked on prescription drugs. She ultimately had a very tragic death and it is still debated over whether or not her death was a suicide or an accident.
