1980’s heartthrob Val Kilmer’s second film, helmed by Valley Girl director Martha Coolidge, is a smart and silly comedy about a fifteen year old prodigy (Gabe Jarrett) who gets accepted to prestigious engineering college Pacific Tech. He rooms with the school’s top senior (Kilmer), a genius who’s decided to focus his big brain on enjoying life while he can rather than work nonstop, to the chagrin of the science professor and local television host (perennial 80’s asshole William Atherton) that’s using the students to build a laser for the military. The two get wise to the nefarious plan for their invention after talking to a former top Pacific Tech student that now lives in their closet (Jon Gries), and with his help and the help of their friends, they carry out a plan to thwart the laser demonstration and stop the government from killing people. Watching a young Kilmer is always a good time, especially when he's wandering around the dorm kitchen in nothing but his boxers and fuzzy slippers. You don't have to be a genius to know how this handsome charmer got everybody's mojo going.
