Val Kilmer, the revered, Julliard-trained actor who was also one of the late 20th century’s biggest heartthrobs, has passed away at age 65. He had reportedly been battling pneumonia, though he had already stepped away from acting after his 2015 throat cancer diagnosis, the treatment of which damaged his vocal cords irreparably. Val did, however, venture back into the spotlight briefly to reprise his role of Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the Top Gun sequelMaverick in 2022.

Val’s sculpted, sweaty abs during the iconic Top Gun volleyball scene is just one example of his hunky legacy. After breaking into Hollywood with impeccable comic timing as the star of both Top Secret! (1984) and Real Genius (1985), he would become even more well known for playing the rakish Madmartigan in Willow (1988), rock’s sex-oozing Lizard King Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991), Wild West gunfighter Doc Holliday in Tombstone (1993), and for taking over as Bruce Wayne/Batman in 1995’s Batman Forever.

But then in 2003, Val took on the role of porn legend John Holmes in the crime drama Wonderland and gave us a better look as those beefy buns. He would go nude again five years later during a steamy shower scene in Conspiracy, and in 2021 we were gifted a few archival glimpses of his naked bod during the documentary Val.
