Home audiences were able to experience Hollywood in the 193os thanks to the small screen series The Last Tycoon (2016-2017), not to be confused with the Hong Kong crime flick The Last Tycoon (2012) or Elia Kazan’s sweeping period piece The Last Tycoon (1976) starring Robert De Niro, Tony Curtis, Robert Mitchum, Jack Nicholson, and Jeanne Moreau. Like the latter pic, this Amazon show is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s posthumously published novel of the same name. As such, it follows movie producer Monroe Stahr (Matt Bomer) who rubs shoulders (and more) with starlets looking to get ahead and big wigs looking to get head. The glamorous drama blends fictional characters (played by Hailee Steinfeld, Jennifer Beals, Kelsey Grammer, and Rosemarie DeWitt, among others) with re-creations of real life powerhouses such as film directors Frank Capra (Nick Lehane), Fritz Lang (Iddo Goldberg), George Cukor (Joshua Weinstein), and Victor Fleming (David McGrath); studio execs Jack Warner (Rob Brownstein) and Louis B. Mayer (Saul Rubinek); gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Melinda McGraw) and iconic actress Marlene Dietrich (Stefanie von Pfetten). The saga also includes a guy named Max Miner (Mark O’Brien) who exposes his chest while stripping to seduce Celia Brady (Lily Collins) in a parked car. Meanwhile, Kathleen Moore (Dominique McElligott) appears in bed with a shirtless Mr. Stahr. Nevertheless, we want to see more! Unfortunately, this series was canceled after one season. Had the show shown some nudity, it could have lasted longer and Mr. Man would have gotten a Mr. Bomer boner!
