Mira Nair, the director behind Mississippi Masala (1991), Kama Sutra (1996), and Monsoon Wedding (2001), also directed the criminally under-seen film The Perez Family (1995). Based on the 1991 novel of the same name, the film is set during the 1980 Mariel boatlift that saw an influx of Cuban immigrants arriving in America via boat. A group of unrelated immigrants who all happen to share the last name Perez decide to pretend to be one family under the assumption that they're less likely to be deported if they're all one big family. Alfred Molina stars as Juan Raul, a former Cuban aristocrat who has spent the last several years as a political prisoner and now hopes to be reunited with his wife who emigrated to America 20 years earlier. Marisa Tomei co-stars as Dorita, a lady of the evening who is presumed to be Juan Raul's wife since they share the same last name, setting the whole "Perez" con game in motion. Also along for the ride are Carmela Perez (Anjelica Huston), Teresa Perez (Trini Alvarado), Felipe Perez (Jose Felipe Padron), and Armando "Papí" Perez (Lázaro Pérez), the latter of whom becomes the de facto patriarch of the family despite him being completely off his rocker! Lázaro Pérez is also responsible for most of the film's nudity, baring all twice in the span of a little more than 20 minutes! 51 minutes in, Molina washes him in a communal shower, surrounded by other naked men, and Lázaro makes a run for it! We also get to see it all again when he climbs up a tree completely naked 21 minutes later! Like they say, the family that gets naked together, stays together!
