Being the 7th attempt by other directors and screenwriters to bring this novel (with the same name) to cinematic life, John Huston accomplishes the feat with uncompromising honesty. Set in a 1939 Mexican town, the story revolves around the “Day of the Dead” ceremony. Geoffrey Firmin (Albert Finney), through his own drunken destruction, attempts to find a lost sibling.
Finney gives a glimpse of his goodies, though only momentarily, in a humorous shower scene when he yanks back the shower curtain to complain of the chilling water’s temperature. For those into older men, there might be a moment or two in Under the Volcano that’ll make you spurt your own hot lava.
