A docu-drama based on Herman Hesse's Francis of Assisi, Francesco (1989) tells the story of St. Francis Assisi, played by Mickey Rourke. The film is told in flashback -- his followers gather after his death to record the details of his pretty remarkable life, from pampered rich kid to prisoner of war to full-blown saint. Among all the pious drama is a surprise scene of pre-saintly skin: As an act of protest against the inequalities of his world, Francesco strips in front of his father and walks out of his house and into the part of town where the destitute and leprosy-ridden live, becoming one of them. You might feel a little guilty savoring this moment in the middle of a story about a saint in the making, but it’s Mickey Rourke totally naked! Just say a couple of Hail Mary’s, and you’ll be fine.
