Mephisto (1981) is a notable and historic film, remembered fondly for winning the 1981 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. It's also remembered for starring a stud! Istvan Szabo directs this fascinating war film that takes place in 1931 Germany a time that was wrought with strife. The movie follows a stage actor who doesn't care much about politics until he is forced to due to Nazi occupation. Now he has to choose whether to accept Nazi doctrine in order to keep working or lose his career...and possibly worse. Should he sell his morality - and his soul - for success as an actor? It's like a Faustian story about theater and Nazis that is based on the book Mephisto by Klaus Mann which was allegedly a true story based on the author's former brother-in-law. Okay, historic hotness come through! The book was banned in Germany until 2000, but this 1980s West German film has lived to see the light of day. It's a battle of the conscious versus selfish ambition, but we're here for Klaus Maria Brandauer who plays Hendrik Höfgen - based on the real deal - who shows us some true sexiness when he dances in his underwear. Klaus dances in his black Speedo and nothing else. Watch his bulge bounce as this long-legged hottie dances about the bedroom. We also get to check out his little nipples and blonde chest hair when he's shirtless in bed with his lover. If only Mephisto's man would show us his kraut!
